Induction and Training

Induction and Training are essential for the safety of anyone who comes onto University grounds.

Induction

Induction is an important part of the School's OHS&W plan as it ensures all personnel on campus are aware of the necessary procedures for safe work within the School.

All new staff and students at the School must undergo the General School Induction which provides overall training on safe work, hazard prevention and emergency procedures. Additional inductions exist for specialised work areas such as the T-Ray Facility, the Anechoic Chamber, the Workshop and Power Laboratories.

You are encouraged to view these induction documents to prepare you for work in these areas, however they are not a substitute for attending a formal induction session. Attendance at these sessions may be compulsory for users in the relevant areas of work and attendance records are maintained for auditing purposes.

Commence the online induction

All staff and postgraduate students are required to complete the University OHS&W Online Induction Course within 3 months of commencing work with the University.

Please inform the Health & Safety Officer when you have completed this course so that the School's Training Records can be updated.

Visitor Safety Guide

The Visitor Safety Guide document provides a basic overview of safety and evacuation procedures within the School. The Operations Manager must be informed if any visitors will be joining you on campus to arrange an induction. However, if the visitor is only very short-term (e.g. a friend joining you for an hour in your office) this is not required, however YOU MUST inform them of evacuation routes and provide them with a copy of this document to ensure their safety should an emergency occur when you are unavailable.

Download the Visitor Safety Guide.

Training

The following OHS&W information is provided for the benefit of School Staff & Students. For further information relating to any of these items please contact the School Health & Safety Officer.

Training Needs Analysis (TNA)

The School's OHS&W training needs are determined through a process of Hazard Identification to determine where specialised training is required to minimise risk.

Common OHS&W training requirements include Hazard Management/Risk Assessment Training, Chemical Safety Management Training, Manual Handling Training, Fire & Emergency Training, and Senior First Aid Training. Task specific training is available in-house or through specialist training companies.

Training requirements are recorded in the School's Training Needs Analysis document, which is reviewed and updated regularly. The TNA is also used as the School's Training Register, recording all training undertaken to date.

University OHS&W Training Plan

The University runs many OHS&W courses and you are encouraged to take any courses that may be relevant to your line of work.
